How to Design a Solar Irrigation Pump System?

With the growing population, the demand for food is also rising, necessitating sustainable increases in crop yields. Solar technology offers a viable solution for powering irrigation systems, particularly in agriculture. A solar irrigation system comprises three main components: solar panels, MPPT controllers, and water pumps. To maximize reliability and cost-efficiency, the design of these systems need be optimized.

Choose a solar water pump

1. Confirm your technical requirements

  • How deep is your well (borehole)?
  • What is the distance between the tank and the well (or other water source, such as a river)?
  • What is the height of the water tank?
  • How much water is needed for irrigation per day (liters/day)?

2. Choose a solar water pump according to your needs.

Calculate the "actual required lift" and find the right pump. Then select the most suitable pump based on different flow rates and prices as well as the material of the pump.

Choose water pump extension cord

Our water pumps come equipped with a 2-meter cable. However, the customers also have the option to extend the cable themselves.

Cable Selection Considerations:
Ensure the cable is waterproof to withstand outdoor conditions and prevent any electrical hazards.

Opt for a 3-wire or 4-wire cable to ensure proper grounding and safe operation.

Cable Thickness:
Lengths ≤ 50 meters: Use a 2.5 sq mm cable.
50 - 100 meters: Use a 4 sq mm cable.
100 - 200 meters: Use a 6 sq mm cable.

How to choose solar panels

It's recommended that the solar panel has a power rating 1.3 -1.5 times greater than the water pump's power.

Additionally, ensure the voltage of the solar array matches the voltage requirements of the water pump.

  • Power 330w*3=990w

In this case, the power and voltage requirements of the water pump can be met, so this solar PV panel array solution is acceptable.
